Why speech pathology?

Speech pathology plays a vital role in helping children overcome communication and feeding barriers, express themselves confidently, eat safely, and engage fully in their daily lives.
Early intervention and treatment of communication and feeding disorders in children is critical to optimize their development and wellbeing. Delayed or lack of intervention can lead to significant long-term costs for the child and society. Early access to speech therapy services is important for vulnerable children's development and future participation in relationships, education, employment, and community life.
Around 20% of children starting school in Australia have a speech, language or communication impairment.
Nearly 1 in 5 or 20% of Australian children aged 4 years have language and early literacy difficulties.
Almost 9% of four to five-year-olds are developmentally vulnerable to language and literacy disorders, and 9.2% are vulnerable to communication disorders.

Assessments

We use formal and informal assessment tools to conduct a thorough assessment of your young child’s feeding and/or communication needs, looking holistically at the child’s life across a range of settings. We will interview the parent/s and caregiver/s to gather information about the child's medical history, developmental milestones, communication abilities, and any concerns the parents may have.

Diagnosis

A speech, language and/or feeding diagnosis for a child typically involves an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist. They assess the child's speech, language and feeding skills, identify areas of delay or disorder, and determine if therapy is needed. The evaluation may include hearing tests, orofacial myology exams, and assessments of feeding, social skills, articulation, phonology, vocabulary, comprehension, and expressive language skills.

Therapy

A child's therapy involves customised exercises and activities to improve communication and/or feeding skills. This may include sound repetition, physical exercises, play activities, picture books, games, songs, feeding activities and conversational practice tailored to the child's specific needs and goals. The therapist works closely with parents to develop an individualised treatment plan and provide home exercises for parents to implement.
We believe that speech therapy should beFun, easy,
& convenient.
